Each project will be published as two sets of volumes in the Journal of the Environmental Concern Collective. The first set will include all of the data collected complied and edited into the basic following format:
Chapters on the current geographic setting and the history of changes in the physical environment of the region the community occupies.
Chapters on the history of the community. This would include previous histories and research including first person accounts and documents pertaining to the development of the community. It would also include our investigations into possible archaeological and historical remains and talks with members about family histories.
Chapters on the type of techniques, equipment and technology we used to collect the field data.
Chapters on the social structure of the community from our data and any previous research.
Chapters on how the social structure of the community has responded to the current environmental situation.
Chapters on the projected change in the climate in the region of the community.
Chapters on what alterations or adjustments the community may need to make to survive as a sustainable unit.
The second set of volume would be the monitoring how the community deals with the changes to its physical and social environment from climate change.
It is possible that each set may only need one volume depending on the nature of the project.
In addition to the published volumes we will produce videos. The videos will show the day to day actions of the community and its layout in the current environment. We will give a copy of this video to the community as a history of its setting in its current situation. We will construct the video to show the development of the history of the community how it got to where it is and how it has responded to changes in the physical and social changes.
In addition to the video we will put together a packet of photographs of individuals, families groupings, community gatherings and locations of special importance to the community. This will be given to the community for distribution to the members. Some of these photos would be available for publications in other journals or press. We would need clearance from the community on which photos we could make available to outside interests.
We would need to make ourselves and our data open for use by other researchers and academic publishers and the popular press. The purpose would be to market our skills, abilities and purpose and also to help increase knowledge about the threat of climate change.
The publication of visual data will be disseminated as widely as possible. Outlets include:
Traditional media is vital for nonprofit visibility and outreach. Many of our focus areas will involve complex issues such as:
Our research may offer both complex solutions and simpler ones — like crop rotation or nutrient adjustments, or capturing floodwater for later use, as is done in parts of Africa with sand banks.
To manage this publication process effectively, we are incorporating a professional librarian. This expert will help catalog, store, and retrieve environmental, agricultural, cultural, and scientific data — making it available when needed.
In In the Blink of an Eye, acclaimed editor Walter Murch suggests that the best edit is the one the audience never notices. When that happens, viewers remain fully immersed in the story—the editor has drawn them in, established mood and place, built emotional and narrative continuity, and left a lasting impression without calling attention to the craft itself.Working with documentary-style footage adds another layer of challenge: editors must accomplish all this while shaping a cohesive and compelling story from often-disparate material, with gaps that Hollywood productions rarely face. With a clear understanding of my clients’ goals, this process comes naturally to me. I’ve lost count of how many times interviewees have expressed surprise, saying things like:
That is the magic of editing.
